The Moab Arts and Recreation expands artistic opportunities for the community by offering arts, educational, cultural and recreational programs and events for children and adults. Since its formation in 1997, the Moab Arts and Recreation Center (MARC) has become a place where community is built. The renovated church, constructed in 1925, sat vacant for two years before volunteers brought the building and the idea of an arts center to life. Participants in classes cross age, cultural and socio-economic boundaries. Yoga classes offer a supportive environment for strengthening and balancing the body as well as expanding awareness and consciousness. High school students learn to knit with the elderly. Moab residents and visitors are introduced to Afro-Cuban dance and Tibetan monks who share their art and music. Access to the arts is building and strengthening the very fibers of the community. This facility and its programs truly bring back the sense of "village" to our society. It's also the gathering place for weddings, turn of the century parties, and political events such as visits from the Governor or his staff when they take the Capitol on the road. Youth programs at the MARC include an annual show of Grand County School District's students Artwalk, activities for all the holidays, afterschool or summer school programs, and The Art Coach, a drawing, painting and mixed media class that meets in the MARC. Classes for all ages include pottery, belly dancing, paper making, yoga, basket making, landscape design, egg painting, beadwork, stained glass, and the MARC's annual holiday craft workshops&.you name the talents in the people of Moab and these are the classes that are offered or will be offered.
