The Chief of Police is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Moab City Council. Chief Navarre was appointed in June of 2000 after serving four months as Acting Chief after the retirement of Moab's police chief in February of 2000. Mike has been with the Moab City Police Department since 1988. Mike thinks of himself as a round-the-clock Chief, but occasionally takes time out to ride his Harley Davidson in the beautiful red rock country that surrounds Moab. Rest assured, however, he's wearing his pager!
Mike's philosophy of law enforcement is one of public information and public relations. He is interested in keeping the public involved and informed in law enforcement activities in Moab. He is especially interested that citizens understand the particular challenges that face his officers. In this regard, he encourages ride-alongs and the establishment of a Citizen's Academy to acquaint and educate the public on police function and procedure. Mike and the entire Moab City Police Department staff encouraged citizens to call in when they are concerned about their safety or the safety of others.
