The Friends of the Parkway is all about our community. Started in August of 2004, Friends of the Parkway are groups or individuals working on the same goal - keeping the Mill Creek and Pack Creek Parkway system free of trash and recycling! The Solutions, a volunteer group that focuses on recycle & trash clean-ups in the streams, on the trails and along the roadsides of this beautiful region, coordinates this program in partnership with the City of Moab. The Friends of the Parkway plan to get full and overlapping coverage of the entire Parkway system, including all the spur trails. (About 5 miles total.) So far, nine groups and individuals have adopted small sections of the Parkway. They do monthly clean ups of their section, (or less often than that, depending on the conditions in their section). The recycling is collected separately and taken to Canyonlands Community Recycling. Gloves and bags are provided. To date, several hundred pounds of recycling has been "redirected" from the Parkway to the local recycle center, Canyonlands Community Recycling.
Our Goals
We plan to organize an annual potluck at Rotary Park to celebrate our accomplishments, meet each other and share ideas. We will eventually enlist volunteers to be tree-tenders: people who will learn about tree and plant care in order to keep the trees and plants of the parkway healthy. We will also host a lecture series using the Parkway as inspiration & classroom. The nature of water and the wealth of plant and animal life will provide the material for many lectures. The first lecture will be on the history and origins of the Parkway and what the future holds for the Parkway. The public will be invited to attend these free lectures.
